Gotu Kola is an essential medicinal drug

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is a commonly used herb in different traditional schools of medicine. A review, published in Herbal Medicine: Open Access, evaluated the use of Gotu Kola as a medicinal plant for various health conditions.

  • Gotu Kola is derived from a psychoactive plant commonly found in the warm regions of Asia, Australia, America, and India.
  • This herb is used not just in Ayurvedic medicine but also in the Unani school of medicine, both of which are based on the theory of the presence of elements in the body. In addition to this, Gotu Kola is also used in Chinese medicine.
  • Literature about the health benefits of Gotu Kola show results from both experimental and clinical investigations.

Based on data gathered from various literature, Gotu Kola is effective in improving brain functions, such as long-term and short-term memory, cognition, alertness, intellectual ability, and concentration, as well as treating brain-related diseases, such as autism, mental retardation, speech disorders, epilepsy, and anxiety. Additionally, Gotu Kola can also promote wound healing, brain repair, and stress relief. It is also recommended to conduct more clinical investigations to determine the herb’s mechanism for treating these disorders.
