Tamarind significantly reduces inflammation in your body

An Indian research, which was published in the Pharmacognosy Journal, revealed that tamarind (Tamarindus indica) has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic activities. This study looked at how tamarind root extracts affect pain and inflammation in an in vivo study involving albino Wistar rats. Moreover, the researchers also determined its effects on the growth of different bacterial strains.

  • Tamarind is widely used in African and Asian countries as traditional treatments for diseases like malaria, fever, stomach ache, wounds, diabetes, rheumatism, ulcers, sore throat, eye infections, and jaundice.
  • Previous studies have observed the ability of extracts from tamarind leaves to kill microbes, lower blood sugar levels, reduce cholesterol, prevent asthma, and promote wound healing. The fruit pulp and seeds also have their own biological activities which include neutralizing free radicals, protecting the liver, and modulating immune responses.
  • Although tamarind bark and roots have been associated with biological activities, such as relieving pain and killing helminths, there are still no scientific studies that back up these claims.
  • In this study, the researchers collected extracts from the roots of the tamarind plant and subjected them to different tests to determine anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic activities.
  • The authors of the study observed the ability of the extracts to inhibit the growth of four pathogenic bacteria, namely Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Albino Wistar rats with carrageenan-induced paw edema were used to determine the anti-inflammatory activity of tamarind root extracts.
  • Researchers also used the rat models to determine the effects of the extracts on the response to heat and acetic acid administration.

The results of the study showed that tamarind root extracts effectively inhibited the growth of all the tested bacterial species. Moreover, the extracts also improved inflammation and pain response. Overall, these results prove that tamarind root has potent antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activities.
